The olive tree is a resilient plant with a very long lifespan—sometimes thousands of years—throughout the world. This longevity is attributed to its production of a polyphenolic antioxidant called oleuropein, which protects the tree against harmful organisms. Research has shown that oleuropein and elenolic acid, natural plant compounds found in olive leaves, possess antibiotic and antioxidant properties and act as antimicrobial agents. Calcium elenolate, derived from elenolic acid and oleuropein, can keep many groups of microorganisms at bay.

Numerous in vivo (within a living body) studies have shown that olive leaf has a vasodilatory (blood vessel–widening) effect, which consequently lowers blood pressure, has antiarrhythmic properties, and reduces LDL cholesterol levels. Laboratory and clinical studies have also observed that olive leaf is effective in heart failure and vascular occlusion (arterial blockage). Additionally, in vivo studies have demonstrated that it helps lower high blood sugar levels. Notably, the American Cancer Research Institute has reported that olive leaf is one of the most important natural plants discovered in the 21st century, with antimicrobial and antiviral properties.

In the past, many diseases could be effectively treated with antibiotics; however, treatments have become increasingly challenging as bacteria and viruses have developed resistance to antibiotics. The active compound oleuropein is also effective against microorganisms that have developed resistance to antibiotics. In addition to this, olive leaf contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, and thanks to its volatile oils, it helps improve their absorption and utilization in the body.
